This website is operated by Grid Guardian Pty Ltd (ABN 16 694 882 703), based in Melbourne, Australia. We handle personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles.
This notice explains what we collect through this website and through our child location service at events, how we use it, and what choices you have.
Two different kinds of information
We handle two separate streams of information and they are treated very differently.
Website information is what you give us through an enquiry form, plus standard technical data from your visit. We keep it for as long as we are dealing with you.
Event service information is what we collect when you register for a device at one of our kiosks, including your child's location while the device is in use. All of it is permanently deleted within seven days of the event.
The sections below deal with each in turn. Where a rule applies to only one stream, we say so.
Information we collect through this website
We collect what you choose to give us. That is mainly the enquiry form: your name, email address, organisation, role, details of your event, and the content of your message.
We also collect limited technical information automatically when you visit. This includes your IP address, browser and device type, the pages you view, and the date and time of access. It is standard server and analytics information, used to keep the site working and to understand how it is being used.
Information we collect at an event
When you register for a device at one of our kiosks we take:
- Your name, residential address and mobile number
- Your child’s first name
While a device is in use we receive its GPS position and basic telemetry such as battery level and signal strength.
We do not collect dates of birth, photographs, identity documents, health information, audio or video. The devices have no camera and do not record audio.
How we use it
We use enquiry information to respond to you and to follow up on what you have asked about. We use technical and analytics information to operate, secure and improve the website.
We use registration details for one purpose only: so we can contact you if a device is not returned or comes back damaged. They are not used for marketing.
We use the GPS position to show you your child's location on your phone, and to alert you if your child moves outside a Safe Zone you have set. Telemetry is used to monitor the health of our devices.
We do not sell or rent personal information, and we do not use it for third-party advertising.
Who can see your child's location
Only you. The location is shown only in the app on the phone you registered with.
It is not visible to the event organiser, to sponsors, to other parents, or to anyone else. Our own staff can see device status and diagnostics, and can access a session where they need to in order to resolve a problem you have raised with them.
Disclosure to third parties
We share personal information only where it is necessary to run the business and deliver the service. That may include our website hosting and infrastructure providers, our analytics provider, our email and contact tools, our mobile network carrier, and our payment provider where an event involves a payment. These providers act on our instructions and are required to protect the information they handle.
We may also disclose personal information where we are required or authorised to do so by law, or where it is necessary to prevent a serious and imminent threat to a person's life, health or safety.
We do not give any registration or location information to the event organiser. They receive a report on how the service was used, and it contains no personal information.
Overseas disclosure
Some of our service providers store or process information outside Australia, including in the United States. Where this happens we take reasonable steps to ensure the information is handled in a way consistent with the Australian Privacy Principles.
How long we keep it
Event service information is permanently deleted within seven days of the event. That covers your registration details and the entire location history. The deletion is automated and cannot be reversed. You can ask us to do it sooner.
We keep operational records about devices and events for our own reporting. These contain no personal information.
Website enquiry information is kept for as long as we are dealing with you and for a reasonable period afterwards, or until you ask us to delete it.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit using TLS. Devices transmit over a private mobile network rather than the public internet. Access to systems holding personal information is restricted to authorised personnel.
No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Children's privacy
We locate a device, not a child.
We collect no information from children, and no information about a child other than a first name, which exists only so that a parent can tell devices apart when they have more than one. Registration is done by a parent or guardian, the service is managed entirely by that parent or guardian, and the location is visible only to them.
All Grid Guardian staff working at an event hold a current Working with Children Check.
Your rights
You can ask us:
- What personal information we hold about you
- To correct it if it is wrong
- To delete it, including before the seven day window closes
Email hello@gridguardian.com.au and we will respond within a reasonable time. There is no charge.
Complaints
If you think we have mishandled your personal information, contact us first at hello@gridguardian.com.au so we can look into it. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
