For parents
What is Grid Guardian?
A child location service for large outdoor events. You collect a small device for your child at our kiosk and see their live position on an app on your phone.
What do you need from me to register?
Your name, address and mobile number, and your child's first name. Nothing else. It takes under three minutes.
Do I need to download an app?
Yes, there will be a QR code at the kiosk that allows you to download the free app.
How accurate is it?
Satellite GPS, accurate to within a few metres outdoors. Accuracy drops inside large sheds and pavilions, as it does with any GPS device.
How often does the location update?
Every 60 seconds. If you tap Find My Child it updates every 20 seconds for 15 minutes.
Can I set an alert if my child wanders off?
Yes. Draw a Safe Zone on the map around wherever you are, and if your child crosses it you're notified straight away. Most separations get caught this way, before they turn into anything.
My child will not wear a wristband. Is there another option?
Yes. Ask for a pendant on a lanyard at registration. They work identically.
Is it suitable for a four year old?
Usually, though the wrist device is chunkier on a smaller child. If it does not sit well, take the pendant. Our staff will help you work it out on the day.
What if my child takes it off?
The device keeps reporting its own position, so you would see where it is rather than where your child is. Come and tell us and we will help.
What if I lose phone signal?
The map shows the last known position with a timestamp and updates as soon as you have coverage again.
How long does the battery last?
A full event day. We hand out devices already charged.
Can I use it for more than one child?
Yes. Each child has their own device and they all appear on the same map.
Can my child let me know if they need me?
Yes. There's a button on the device. If your child presses it you get an alert straight away with their location.
Privacy and safety
Can anyone else see where my child is?
No. The location is visible only in the app on the phone you registered with. Not to other parents, not to the event, not to anyone else.
Can the device see or hear my child?
No. It has no camera and it records no audio. It reports a position and nothing else.
What information do you collect, and why?
Your name, address and mobile number, and your child's first name. It exists so we can follow up if a device does not come back.
What happens to my data after the event?
Registration details and location history are permanently deleted within seven days. The deletion is automated and cannot be reversed.
Do you sell or share any of it?
No. Not to the event, not to sponsors, not to anyone.
Do your staff have Working with Children Checks?
Yes. Every Grid Guardian staff member working at an event holds a current check.
Does this mean I can stop watching my child?
No, and we would rather say that plainly. It tells you where your child is when you have lost sight of them, and warns you when they are drifting away. It does not watch them for you.
Can I ask you to delete my data straight away?
Yes. Email hello@gridguardian.com.au and we will do it rather than waiting for the seven day window.
For event organisers
What does it cost to bring Grid Guardian to our event?
It depends on size, length and how many devices you want available. Tell us your dates and expected attendance and we will put something specific together.
What do we need to provide?
Kiosk space in a busy family area, shelter, agreement that your information points will accept returns, and help letting families know the service exists. No staff time and no equipment.
How many devices do you deploy?
It depends on the event. We size it against expected family attendance and how many devices are likely to be in use at once, which matters more than the daily total.
Are you insured?
Yes. We hold and maintain public liability, product liability and professional indemnity insurance, and provide certificates of currency.
What size events do you work with?
Anything from a few thousand people upwards. We have run four consecutive days at an event of approximately 483,000 people in total.
How much of our staff's time does this take?
Almost none. We set up, staff and pack down ourselves.
Something we have not covered?
Email hello@gridguardian.com.au and we will answer it.
